One Step Forward

*Katsudon: Consisting of rice and breaded pork ribs, katsudon is said to be Izuku’s favorite dish.

Waiting for Izuku's reply was excruciating, if he'd even have one… Bakugou didn't want to think so little of the greenette, he knew the small one enough and he wouldn't lower himself to the point of leaving without any words of goodbye but, after such a shocking confession, the blonde started to doubt that.

Even though only twenty four hours went by since their last conversation, the cupid already missed his soulmate and also felt the imminent effects of the curse boiling deep inside him, ready to burst at any moment.

It was on the morning of next day that Katsuki woke up with his cellphone buzzing with a notification; he reached for the device, grog out of sleep in bed and just woken-up, then he froze upon seeing Izuku's name on the screen.

Sitting up right away, the cupid opened the text message.

Are you awake?

His fingers hovered over the touchscreen’s keyboard thinking of a reply, but there has been some time he didn’t hear the freckled one’s voice after the “bomb” dropped, so he called him very hesitantly and crossed his fingers in hopes for Izuku to pick up.

Kacchan?

Katsuki almost sighed out in relief upon hearing his answer. “Good morning, Izuku. Are you ready to talk now?”

I guess so… but we need to talk in person.

“I understand… Your house or mine?”

Could you come to mine? If it’s not a bother…

“No bother at all, I’m coming over. See you there.”

See ya.

Quickly hanging up the phone, Bakugou hopped off of bed and got dressed in a hurry, searching for his keys soon after and driving straight to the greenette’s home; once at his destination, he gathered up the courage to exit the car, rang the bell hesitantly and almost jumped on Izuku when he answered the door.

“Hi.” He greeted with an awkward smile.

Izuku received him with just about the same expression. “Hi… wanna come in?”

Bakugou nodded and excused himself as he walked through the door, following Izuku into the living room as if it was his first time in that house.

They sat down on the couch and hesitated, each of them searching for the right words to say.

“Did you have breakfast?”

“Hm?” Katsuki mumbled confused at the question.

“It’s still early and we just woke up… want to eat something before we start?”

Katsuki paused; that wasn’t the best time for his hospitality. “Maybe later, it’s been some time I haven't heard from you and I still don’t know what to expect…”

Izuku nodded embarrassedly. “Sure… I’m sorry, I didn’t want to worry you over nothing, I just needed some time to put my thoughts into place. Truth is… in the end, you’re still Kacchan.”

Katsuki smiled in relief. “So you get it.”

“Hey, I can’t control that and neither do you, it’s the way you were born, so we just need to learn to deal with it.” The greenette shrugged.

“Thank you, Izu.” Katsuki caressed his green locks behind his ear. “So… is the moving still up?” He risked asking.

“Of course! I can move into your apartment, what do you think?” Izuku smiled brightly.

“Actually, I was thinking of moving here.”

“Why here?” The greenette asked curiously.

“My building’s been surrounded by paparazzi lately and it’s pissing me off, besides, life here is simpler and cozier, I think it’ll be good for us.” He added with a smile.

Izuku smiled back. “Right, we’ll see that later, then; right now you must be hungry, want some breakfast?”

“I do.”

Not noticing the suggestiveness in his tone, the greenette stood towards the kitchen to take a portion of leftovers for Kacchan, however, he was surprised by a pair of arms grabbing him and picking him up.

“Ah- Kacchan! What are you doing?!”

“Serving myself.” Bakugou smirked.

“But wait-!”

“Silence, you owe me that after making me worry over nothing.”

Despite protesting and kicking a little, Izuku let himself be carried into the bedroom, where Bakugou almost ripped his clothes as he yanked them off the greenette who exclaimed surprised; in the end, he just gave himself in, letting the Incubus do as he pleased.

Izuku fell asleep right after and Katsuki let him rest, placing a kiss on the corner of his mouth before standing to have breakfast with the leftovers in the fridge, that was when he was surprised to see that the freckled one was kind enough to cook two portions. After a quick meal, the Incubus went back into the bedroom where Izuku was already awake. Bakugou smiled and went up to him, sitting on the edge of the bed and leaning in to kiss his lips.

“Hello yourself.” The cupid whispered with a loving stare.

“Kacchan…” Izuku smiled back.

“We need to set a date to organize the move, now it’s official.”

“Right, but we need to do something else before.”

Bakugou eyed him curiously. “What, exactly?”

“I want to introduce you to my mom.” The greenette smiled innocently.

The Incubus paused to digest the information, his heart started beating fast and a heat spread from his chest to his neck and up to his cheeks, then he smiled softly. “That’s fair… I also always wanted to meet her.”

“Hm… In that case, can I meet miss Mitsuki as well?”

The request made Katsuki freeze. “Excuse me…?”

“... I can’t?” Izuku supported himself on his elbows, slightly disappointed.

“That’s not it, it's just that… we have kind of a rocky relationship.”

“Oh…”

“But I’ll make an effort for you.”

“Y-you don’t have to! I don’t want to force you into it, if you don’t want to!”

“I’ll do it; it’s not like my mom is all that terrible, she’s just severe, besides, you’re worth it.”

“Kacchan… you don’t have to force yourself into doing what you don’t want to because of me, I don’t wanna make you uncomfortable.”

“Hey, you’re not forcing me into anything, I’ll do it, it seems like a fair exchange, especially now that we’re getting serious.”

Seeing himself without any more arguments, Izuku just fell silent with a flushed face.

“Now I have to go back, I need to get dressed before leaving for work. We’ll see that later, okay?” Bakugou smiled at him and Izuku smiled back.

“Okay.”

“See you later.”

With a last kiss, the cupid got up, looking behind at the greenette who smiled goofily at him, and then left.

Along the days, the plans and preparations for the move started; Katsuki didn’t want to take many things, mostly half of his wardrobe and work materials. “It’s unnecessary to take extravagant possessions to a simple life”, he reasoned.

As they boxed his belongings and gradually prepared for the big day, they also planned the day to visit missus Midoriya, meanwhile, the Incubus prepared psychologically on his behalf as well.

It’s been a while since the last time Katsuki saw himself in front of his mother’s house, he didn’t dare to show his face since that last sermon, he knew what was waiting for him after all and he didn’t want to hear it.

Taking a last deep breath, the cupid raised his hand hesitantly and knocked on the old wooden door as a butler received him almost immediately.

“Master Katsuki, what a lovely surprise!” He greeted him excitedly. “I’ll go tell mistress Mitsuki you’re here, come on in.”

Katsuki held back the impulse to roll his eyes and entered the main hall; before the butler had time to retreat, however, the Succubus appeared in front of them.

“Well, what a surprise… What happened this time?” Mitsuki asked her son with a quirked brow.

The butler gave them privacy to update themselves and Katsuki hesitated awkwardly. “What makes you think that I need your help?”

“It’s always been the one reason to bring you here.”

Her son lowered his eyes with a hint of guilt. “We need to talk for a bit…”

“Alright, come sit down, then.” Mitsuki retreated, motioning for him to accompany her into the fireplace room, Katsuki followed her unwillingly.

As they sat down, Mitsuki ordered the maids to bring them tea and they complied right away.

“I don’t plan on staying for long.” Katsuki warned.

“I know you’re busy, but you could at least do this for your mother, right?”

The cupid lowered his eyes before turning back to Mitsuki. “Listen, I… there’s someone I’d like to introduce you to.”

“Hmpf! I knew it. I’m just glad you didn’t let yourself make it to your limit before accepting your soulmate.”

“Mom…”

“Alright, honey, and when do you plan on introducing me to the lucky guy?” Mitsuki winked at him.

“We’re still planning everything… I’ll meet his mother in the next few days now that we’re getting serious, but I plan on telling you when the chance comes up.”

“It’s good that you accept your soulmate now, I told you it’s no fairytale.”

Katsuki growled impatiently. “I knew you’d say that.”

Mitsuki giggled. “Sometimes it’s good to say ‘I told you so’, I couldn’t help it! But the guy seems to be good for you… I’m proud of you, Katsuki.”

The Incubus scratched his temple awkwardly. “Well… thank you.”

“Does he know?”

“Oh, well… yes. I told him, when he asked to move in together.”

“And how did he take it?”

“Kind of well… it took some time for everything to go back to normal but, in the end, he understood it.”

“That’s great!”

“Yeah…” Katsuki smiled awkwardly.

“I can’t wait to meet him!”

A comforting feeling spread through the cupid’s chest, he didn’t remember the last time he had such a pleasant conversation with his mother for he’s always been spoiled and talked back on her; Izuku was being better for him than he could’ve thought.

The day finally came, Izuku and Katsuki were on the outside of missus Midoriya’s house and, even though he didn’t show, the Incubus was a nervous wreck.

“Are you sure that your mother will accept me?” He asked nervously when Izuku rang the doorbell.

“Don’t worry, Kacchan… I’m sure she’ll like you!”

“That’s not the problem.”

“Is okay, she knows I’m bi.”

Katsuki bit his tongue; he didn’t think that missus Midoriya knew about that detail, he also had no idea if she took it well. Before he could ask, however, the door opened to reveal a short, chubby woman with greenish hair.

“Hi, mom!” Izuku greeted her excitedly.

“Izuku!” The woman approached to hug her son and then stepped back to take a good look at him. “It’s been so long, sweetie! I’d like you to come visit more often.”

“Oh, sure! Sorry about that…” Izuku scratched his head awkwardly.

His mother shook her head. “I know you’re busy, but I’d like you to find some more time for your mother… it’s been kind of lonely.” She said and turned to Katsuki. “And you must be mister Bakugou, right? Izuku told me about you.”

“Oh- right! Nice to meet you, missus Mido-” The Incubus bent his body in a bow, but was received with a slap in his face.

Katsuki stumbled back as he held his face and turned to Izuku who looked from his boyfriend to his mother in shock.

“How much did you tell her?” Katsuki grumbled.

“Quite enough, mister Bakugou…” Inko smiled sarcastically.

“Mom?!”

“But, despite the rocky start with my son, I thank you for everything you’ve been doing for him… I expect you to take good care of Izuku, from now on.” She said with a bow.

“Oh- sure! You can count on me for that, missus Midoriya.” Bakugou said as he followed her lead.

“Well, come on in, boys! Dinner’s ready.”

“Mom, I told you we’d help with that, when we get here.” Izuku sighed tiredly as he followed her into the house.

“I know, honey! But I wanted to make something special, after all, I know how much you like my katsudon*.”

Izuku laughed awkwardly; there really was nothing that could beat his mother’s katsudon.

In the end, everything went better than they expected. Inko was visibly still holding a grudge on Katsuki for what he did to her son but, aside from the literal smack in his face, they didn’t touch on the subject anymore; Katsuki was really in love with Izuku and it showed.

After dinner, the guys offered to help with dishes and then they watched some TV, talking and drinking tea; when they told their goodbyes, Inko turned to her son before they left.

“Oh, Izuku! Can you stay for a bit longer…? We need to talk about something.”

The greenette turned to his boyfriend who gave him an encouraging look.

“Sure… what would it be about?”

“We need to talk in private.” Inko said as she turned to Bakugou.

“Of course… I’ll go first, ‘will wait for you in the car.” He told Izuku.

Kissing his boyfriend’s forehead, Katsuki retreated, leaving mother and son alone. They both went back into the living room and sat down.

“There’s no easy way to tell you this, honey… your father and I… are going to divorce.”

“Huh…?” Izuku spoke in a disappointed tone.

“I didn’t want it to get to this… but, with no foresights for your father to be back, and with you living your own life now, it’s been hard to deal with loneliness.”

Izuku lowered his sad eyes. “Since when?”

“It’s been a few weeks we talked on the phone… he agrees with the decision… maybe he’ll stay in the United States, after all.”

Izuku didn’t know what else to say, his green eyes watered up by the sudden news.

“Oh, honey…” Inko held his hand to comfort him. “I didn’t want it to come to this.”

“You have a right to it… I’m sorry you’ve been feeling so lonely for so long.”

“Is okay… I… met someone.”

Izuku turned to his mother, startled. “Huh…?”

“I know what you’re thinking, but it’s not like that… We ended up meeting at my job and felt interested in each other… We still haven’t tried anything, after all I’m still married and he knows it but, when the divorce is official, we’ll try to see each other and see how it goes.”

The greenette went quiet, mortified by the amount of information at once.

“I’m sorry it has come to this.” Inko said slowly.

Izuku sniffled. “Is okay, mom… it’s just hard to take that in all at once. But who are you seeing, after all?”

Inko showed about a sad smile. “His name is Toshinori Yagi, he’s been employed at the company recently… I could introduce him to you any day, if you want…”

“Of course I do.”

“That’s fair, isn’t it?”

Inko comforted her son as he tried to let what he just heard sink in, he needed some time after all, later, mother and son told their goodbyes and Izuku went up to Kacchan who waited for him at the car, his swollen eyes and tired expression didn’t go by unnoticed.

“Hey… what did you talk about?” The Incubus asked him worriedly.

Izuku hesitated. “My parents are getting divorced.”

The news hit him like a shock. “Oh… I’m sorry about that.”

“Is alright… my dad hasn't shown his face in seventeen years now, my mom deserves better than that.”

Bakugou didn’t think twice, he unfastened the seatbelt and leaned in for a sudden hug, and then Izuku let it flow, crying everything he’s been holding back until now. They remained like that for some time until finally being able to drive back home.
